Firestarters are a fun, easy project to make and a great way to use up leftover wax from other projects. Firestarters sell for anywhere from $.50 to $1.00 each and since you are basically using your leftovers, the profits can be very high for you.
What are firestarters? Firestarters are an easier way to ignite wood for a fire than rolled up newspaper or paper scraps. Firestarters are made with flammable materials such as wood chips, shredded paper, dryer lint, pinecones or other botanicals and wax. These flammable materials are then coated in wax which helps to lengthen the burn time and extend the fire. My husband calls them "Magic Wax Muffins".
Who needs firestarters? Anyone that needs to light wood on fire. They are great for camping, wood stoves, wood burning fire places, chimneas, fire pits etc.
How do you use firestarters? Place a firestarter on a flat piece of wood and then place smaller pieces (can be larger than kindling) on top. When the firestarter is lit, it will burn anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes depending on the materials they are made from which is sufficient enough time to catch the larger pieces of wood on fire. Larger logs can then be added to the fire.
Materials:
Muffin tray
Paper muffin cups or portion cups
Flammable materials such as shredded paper, wood chips, dryer lint, pinecones, dried botanicals, etc.
Instructions:
Step 1
Melt wax to 180 degrees F. Add color and scent if desired.
Step 2
Spray muffin tray with Mold Release Spray then line with paper muffin cups
Step 3
Fill muffin cups with flammable materials of choice and pack tightly. Insert a short piece of wick into the sides if needed. (This helps to ignite larger botanicals such as pine cones)
Step 4
Pour melted wax into muffin cups to fill papers and let cool.
Step 5
Remove firestarters from muffin tray and enjoy! Firestarters make a great gift for all of your camping and wood burning friends and family. Have fun and I hope you enjoyed this project.
